Cantilever Car Parking Shades in Saudi Arabia: Types, Materials and Planning Sizes

A practical briefing for facilities, procurement and project teams planning shade work in Saudi Arabia.

A good car parking shade should protect vehicles without making the parking area difficult to use. Columns should not interfere with vehicle doors, turning movements or pedestrian access, and the roof should provide practical coverage for the actual parking layout.

This is why cantilever car parking shades are widely considered for villas, offices, schools, hospitals, factories, warehouses and commercial parking areas across Saudi Arabia. Selecting one involves more than choosing a design from a photograph: the parking arrangement, available column positions, covering material, steel finish, required clear height and site conditions must all be reviewed before fabrication.

What is a cantilever car parking shade?

A cantilever parking shade uses columns positioned mainly along one side of the covered parking area. Steel arms or rafters extend from those columns to support the shade covering. Keeping the opposite side open can make it easier for vehicles to enter and leave the bays and can reduce obstructions near doors and pedestrian routes.

Cantilever systems can be planned for individual vehicles, adjacent bays, long rows and back-to-back parking arrangements. The final support arrangement must follow the actual site. A layout suitable for a private villa may not be appropriate for a busy hospital, factory or school.

Single cantilever parking shades

A single cantilever arrangement generally covers one parking row from a line of columns located along the rear or side. It can suit boundary rows, building-side parking and locations where the vehicle-access edge needs to remain open.

For longer rows, structural modules may be connected to provide continuous coverage. Column spacing, steel sizes, connections and foundation requirements must follow the approved structural design and site conditions rather than a generic online detail.

Double cantilever parking shades

A double cantilever arrangement can cover two parking rows from a central support line, extending in both directions over vehicles parked on either side. This can be useful for larger office, industrial, school, hospital and commercial parking areas.

The central supports must be coordinated with bay markings, wheel stops, pedestrian routes, drainage and underground services. Although one structural line serves both rows, the spans, connections and foundations still require project-specific engineering.

Common preliminary parking-shade planning sizes

The dimensions below are common preliminary planning references used during early discussions. They are not compulsory Saudi standards and must not replace an approved parking layout, consultant requirement or authority requirement.

Parking capacityCommon preliminary moduleApproximate covered area
One car3 m × 6 m18 m²
Two cars6 m × 6 m36 m²
Three cars9 m × 6 m54 m²
Four cars12 m × 6 m72 m²

In particular, 3 × 6 m for one car and 6 × 6 m for two cars are planning references only, not mandatory dimensions. Final dimensions depend on the approved bay width and length, vehicle types, spacing, roof projection, column locations, pedestrian routes, drainage, site access and project requirements.

A clear height of approximately 2.4 to 2.5 metres may be discussed as an initial passenger-vehicle planning reference, but it is not a fixed requirement. Parking for buses, ambulances, delivery vehicles, tall vehicles or roof-mounted equipment may need more clearance.

Why the shade may be larger than the parking bay

The shade covering is not always identical to the painted bay dimensions. Additional projection may improve coverage as the sun angle changes, but an unnecessarily large canopy can increase structural loads, steel and foundation requirements. The design should balance useful coverage with safe engineering and the actual site.

HDPE fabric for cantilever parking shades

High-density polyethylene, commonly called HDPE, is used for ventilated outdoor shade applications. Its knitted construction allows some air movement, which can suit open parking areas where solar shade and ventilation are priorities.

The quotation should identify the proposed product, shade factor, UV-stabilisation information, fabric weight, colour, reinforcement and manufacturer documentation. HDPE is generally water-permeable and should not be described as completely waterproof.

PVC-coated polyester membranes

PVC-coated polyester may be considered where a coated membrane and greater weather coverage are required. Its suitability depends on the membrane specification, surface treatment, seam construction, tensioning and drainage design.

A coated membrane still needs suitable slopes and low-point planning so rainwater is not allowed to collect. Product weight, tensile data, fire-performance documentation and cleaning requirements should come from the selected manufacturer’s current technical information.

PVDF-coated fabric

PVDF is commonly used as a surface finish on compatible coated membrane systems. Depending on the selected product, it may support surface protection and cleanability, but “PVDF fabric” is not a complete specification by itself.

The proposal should identify the base fabric, coating construction and surface finish. For a broader comparison, read our guide to HDPE, PVC and PVDF car parking shade materials.

Steel structure and finishing options

The steel structure transfers the canopy loads to its foundations. Column, beam, rafter, pipe and connection sizes cannot be responsibly selected from a general table. They depend on the span, geometry, design loads, column arrangement, covering material, connections, foundations and site conditions.

Finishing options may include protective paint systems, powder coating and hot-dip galvanizing. For demanding coastal or industrial exposure, a project specification may require APCS 6 or an accepted equivalent. Any proposed coating or equivalent must be reviewed against the client or consultant requirement before fabrication.

Exposure is particularly relevant to work in Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and other coastal areas. Our coastal shade-structure planning guide explains why the site environment, coating specification, drainage and maintenance access should be considered together.

What affects the quotation?

There is no responsible single price for every cantilever parking shade. The number of bays, total covered area, single or double arrangement, structural span, material, steel-protection system, foundation scope, site access, underground services, installation restrictions and project location can all affect the scope.

For an initial review, provide the project city, parking arrangement, approximate dimensions or bay count and any available drawings or photographs. Our shade quotation checklist covers the information that can help during the next stage.

Cantilever parking shades across Saudi Arabia

Umbrella Tent & Shades supplies car parking shades across Saudi Arabia from Dammam. Coastal exposure may influence steel protection and maintenance planning in Dammam and Khobar, while Riyadh parking-shade layouts must still be reviewed around sunlight, dust, access and operational requirements.

City-level guidance cannot replace an actual drawing, site review or project specification. Every location and parking arrangement should be assessed individually.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard size of a one-car parking shade?

Approximately 3 m × 6 m, or 18 m², is a common preliminary planning reference. It is not compulsory for every project. Final dimensions follow the actual bay, vehicle type, roof projection and approved layout.

What size is commonly used for two cars?

Approximately 6 m × 6 m is often used as an initial two-car planning reference. The completed structure may differ according to the column positions, vehicle spacing and required coverage.

Is a cantilever shade better than a four-column shade?

Neither system is automatically better. Cantilever shades can keep one access side open, while other arrangements may better suit particular spans, layouts, structural requirements or budgets.

Is HDPE parking-shade fabric waterproof?

HDPE shade fabric is generally water-permeable. Where waterproof coverage is required, a suitable coated membrane or rigid roofing system may need to be considered.

Which material is best for parking shades in Saudi Arabia?

The suitable material depends on the required ventilation, weather coverage, appearance, cleaning needs, consultant specification and budget. HDPE, PVC-coated polyester and PVDF-finished membranes serve different requirements.

Can existing parking-shade fabric be replaced?

Suitable existing structures can be reviewed for fabric replacement. Clear photographs of the frame, covering, connections and damaged areas help define the initial scope.
