Single and double cantilever parking shades both keep the main support columns away from part of the vehicle-access side, but they solve different parking layouts. A single cantilever commonly serves one row of bays. A double cantilever commonly extends in two directions from a central support zone to cover two opposing rows.
Neither arrangement is automatically better. The right choice depends on the bay layout, drive aisles, pedestrian routes, available foundation zones, underground services, required clearances and the approved structural design.

What is a single cantilever parking shade?
A single cantilever shade generally supports a canopy that projects over one row of vehicles from columns positioned toward one side of that row. It can be useful where the parking row follows a boundary, landscaped strip or building edge and where a central support zone is not available.
The word “cantilever” does not mean the front of the bay will always be completely free of every structural element. The frame geometry, bracing and foundation arrangement depend on the approved system and engineering design.
A single cantilever may suit the site when:
- only one row requires cover;
- a continuous rear or side support zone is available;
- the columns can be coordinated with doors, kerbs and pedestrian routes;
- the boundary condition allows the intended canopy projection; and
- the foundation locations do not conflict with known services.
Check these constraints before selecting it
A wall, property boundary or landscaped strip may appear to provide an easy column line, but space is still required for foundations, fabrication tolerances, drainage details and safe maintenance access. The canopy must also be coordinated with lighting, signage, trees, façades and vehicle circulation.
What is a double cantilever parking shade?
A double cantilever shade generally covers two parking rows from a support zone positioned between them. This can use a central island or dividing strip efficiently when the car park already has back-to-back bays.
Because the structure serves both sides, the central zone requires careful coordination. Columns, foundations, drainage, lighting and underground services may all compete for the same space.
A double cantilever may suit the site when:
- two rows face away from a shared central island;
- the island provides a practical support and foundation zone;
- access and door opening must be reviewed on both sides;
- the paired rows are intended to read as one coordinated structure; and
- the central line can be kept clear of conflicting services.
Check these constraints before selecting it
Do not assume that a narrow painted median or kerb is large enough for the structural system. The designer needs verified information about the island, foundations and buried services. Vehicle clearance, pedestrian crossings and maintenance access must be reviewed for both rows.
How column position affects daily use
Column position is one of the most important practical differences between the two arrangements. A drawing should show columns in relation to bay lines, vehicle doors, wheel stops, pedestrian paths and accessible spaces.
For an existing car park, photographs alone may not reveal underground utilities or foundation conflicts. A site survey and available utility information should be reviewed before the final layout is approved.
Vehicle movement and access
The shade should be planned as part of the complete car park, not as an object placed above individual bays. Review turning paths, drive-aisle width, entrance and exit movements, loading routes and emergency access.
Also check whether the canopy edge or frame could affect tall vehicles, signs, lighting or adjacent building access. Required clear height must be confirmed for the actual users and project requirements; it should not be copied from a generic example.
Fabric choice does not decide the layout by itself
HDPE mesh, PVC-coated polyester and selected PVDF-coated membrane systems can be considered for shade structures, subject to the intended coverage, approved detailing and manufacturer information. However, fabric selection does not remove the need to coordinate the frame, slopes, connections and drainage strategy.

Steel finish and site exposure
Painted, powder-coated and hot-dip galvanized steel are possible finish categories, but the correct system depends on the project specification, environment, preparation and maintenance plan. For Dammam, Khobar and other coastal or industrial locations, the exposure should be stated clearly in the request.

Which option is more economical?
There is no reliable answer based only on the words “single” and “double.” Cost depends on the site layout, total coverage, structural design, foundations, material system, coating specification, access, quantities and installation constraints.
A fair comparison should use the same confirmed scope and clearly state exclusions. Comparing only a unit price without reviewing coverage and responsibilities can be misleading.
A practical selection process
1. Mark the rows to be covered
Start with a current parking plan. Identify single boundary rows, paired central rows, pedestrian crossings and spaces that need different treatment.
2. Identify possible support zones
Mark kerbs, islands, walls and landscaped areas, then check them against known services, drainage and access requirements. Treat these as possible zones until engineering and site information confirm them.
3. Review operations
Consider when the car park is busiest, whether rows can be closed during installation, how deliveries enter and whether the facility has restricted working periods.
4. Compare complete proposals
Ask each proposal to state the layout, fabric product, steel finish, design scope, foundation responsibility, installation scope, assumptions and exclusions. This gives the procurement team a clearer basis for comparison.

For either arrangement, provide:
- project city and site use;
- a current parking layout or marked aerial image;
- number and arrangement of bays;
- approximate coverage dimensions;
- photographs of the rows, islands and boundaries;
- known underground or overhead services;
- preferred fabric, if specified;
- steel coating requirement, if specified;
- access and operating restrictions; and
- required design, fabrication and installation scope.

Frequently asked questions
Is a double cantilever always suitable for two rows?
No. The shared support zone, foundation space, services, vehicle clearance and structural design must all be checked. Some paired rows may require a different arrangement.
Can a single cantilever be installed beside a wall?
It may be possible, but the boundary, foundations, clearances, drainage, maintenance access and nearby services must be reviewed. A wall should not be treated as automatic approval for a particular frame position.
Does double cantilever mean fewer columns?
Not necessarily. Column quantity and spacing are engineering decisions affected by the selected structural system and project conditions. They should not be promised without an approved design.
Which option gives better access to vehicle doors?
That depends on the actual column line, bay width, vehicle position and adjacent pedestrian areas. Both layouts can create conflicts if the columns are not coordinated with the marked parking plan.
