“Galvanized or painted?” is a useful question when pricing a car parking shade, but the answer needs more detail than a finish name. The two systems involve different preparation, inspection and repair steps. The owner's specification and the actual exposure of the site should lead the decision.

What happens before the coating is applied?
Hot-dip galvanizing immerses fabricated steel in molten zinc. It should be considered while the pieces are being designed and fabricated, because the galvanizer needs suitable components and an agreed scope. A painted system instead depends on the specified surface preparation and a compatible coating schedule. Neither description alone tells you which steel pieces, welds, brackets and fasteners are included.
Ask the supplier to identify the preparation standard or method, the finish specification and the party responsible for each stage. If galvanizing is followed by paint for a particular colour or owner requirement, it is a combined system with its own surface-preparation procedure; it should not be described simply as “painted galvanized steel.”
What should be checked before installation?
For either option, the approved submittal should describe how the completed work will be inspected. Check that the quoted scope includes the relevant columns, arms, connection plates and fasteners, and states what records the supplier will provide. The inspection requirements should come from the applicable project specification, not from an assumed universal value.
Transport and site assembly matter too. Some connections or site work may occur after a factory finish is applied. Agree in advance how handling marks, exposed steel and work at connections will be assessed. A photograph of a completed shade cannot establish the coating products, preparation or inspection results.
How are damaged areas repaired?
A repair method must match the original system and the project requirement. The American Galvanizers Association explains that damaged or uncoated hot-dip galvanized areas are addressed under ASTM A780; the specified method and preparation should be confirmed before touch-up. A paint repair likewise requires a compatible preparation and coating procedure. A quick coat over corrosion or loose material is not a substitute for inspection.
Where paint is applied over galvanizing, ask whether the proposed touch-up material is compatible with the later paint. The repair procedure should say who carries out the work and who accepts it after installation.
Which is appropriate for a Saudi parking shade?
There is no automatic choice for every site in Saudi Arabia. A parking row in Dammam or Khobar may need a careful exposure review, while another site may have a binding owner or consultant specification. The coating decision also depends on the form of the steelwork, colour requirement, access for future maintenance and the approved design.
