When a car parking shade is specified, the covering often gets the first question: HDPE or a coated membrane? The steel beneath it deserves an equally clear decision. Columns, rafters, brackets and connections remain exposed to the conditions at the site, and their finish must be part of the approved scope.
There is no single finish that suits every parking area in Saudi Arabia. Start with the owner's specification, the site's exposure, the proposed fabrication method and how the structure will be inspected and maintained. This guide explains the options without assigning a performance rating to an unspecified product.
What does the steel finish need to do?
A protective system is selected to suit the steel and the conditions it will face. A sheltered interior and an exposed parking area may have different requirements; so may a coastal location, an industrial site and a parking area farther inland. The answer depends on the actual exposure and the project documents, not the city name alone.
Ask the proposal to name the intended system and its scope. A phrase such as “painted steel” does not tell the buyer how the surface will be prepared, which products will be used, what happens at connections or how the finished work will be inspected.
Painted steel
A paint system can provide a specified colour and protective finish. Its result depends on surface preparation, compatible products, application and inspection. The required preparation and coating schedule should be stated in the project specification or agreed submittal; a colour alone is not a coating specification.
For an existing frame, repainting is a separate assessment. The condition of the old coating, corrosion, connections and access must be reviewed before deciding whether local repairs or a wider treatment are appropriate. Painting over an unknown or unsound surface should not be assumed to solve the problem.
Powder-coated steel
Powder coating is another possible finish for fabricated components, often considered when a consistent colour and factory application are important. The selected product, preparation, component geometry and installation details still need to fit the job. Damage during handling or site assembly should be addressed under the agreed repair procedure.
Powder coating can also be specified over hot-dip galvanized steel as a combined system, but that requires preparation suited to the galvanized surface and coordination between the galvanizer and coating applicator. It should be described as such in the proposal rather than assumed from a photograph.
Hot-dip galvanized steel
Hot-dip galvanizing applies a zinc coating to fabricated steel by immersion. It is a distinct process from painting or powder coating. The fabricator must plan for the process, including suitable component design and coordination with the galvanizer, before manufacturing is complete.
A quotation should identify the intended galvanizing specification and which items are included. Connections, fasteners, any work performed after galvanizing and accepted repair methods also need attention. If a coloured finish is required over the zinc coating, the additional paint or powder system needs its own preparation and approval.
Coastal and owner-specified work
For Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and other locations where exposure or an owner standard affects the project, send the actual requirement with the inquiry. Do not assume that every site near the coast needs the same treatment. The coating choice should also be coordinated with the covering material and structure. What to ask suppliers to state
- Which steel components and connections receive the proposed finish?
- What preparation, product or galvanizing specification applies?
- Who checks the finished work and what documents are handed over?
- How are transport, assembly and site damage addressed?
- Does the quotation include any owner or consultant coating requirement, or is that a separate item?
These questions make proposals easier to compare without pretending that one finish is always the cheapest or most suitable. The final choice follows the project requirements and an approved technical submission.
